My Hometown: Then and Now
Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm going to tell you all about my hometown - both how it is today and what it was like a long time ago. I've lived here my whole life so I know a lot about this place. Get ready for an adventure through time!
Let me start by telling you about my hometown now in the present day. I live in a medium-sized city called Oakville. It has around 200,000 people living here. We have lots of houses, stores, parks, schools and other buildings. The downtown area is my favorite part - it has cute shops, yummy restaurants, a movie theater, and a big park with a pond where you can feed the ducks.
One thing I really like about Oakville today is how green and environmentally-friendly it is. We have recycling and composting programs, and there are special bins all over for sorting your trash. A lot of people have solar panels on their houses to use the sun's energy. My school even has a garden where we grow vegetables! Speaking of my school, it's a nice modern building with smart boards, laptops and tablets for learning. I love technology.
When I'm not in school, I enjoy going to the community center to swim or play sports. We have awesome facilities like an indoor pool, gym, ice rink and fields. There are always activities and camps for kids. In the summer, my friends and I spend a lot of time at the beach on Lake Ontario. We swim, build sandcastles and have picnics. It's so beautiful there!
Now let me tell you about what Oakville was like way back when my grandparents were kids, in the 1950s. The city looked totally different! For one thing, it was much smaller with way fewer people. There were only about 15,000 residents living here at that time. A lot of the area was still farmland and woods instead of houses and buildings.
Back then, the downtown area was just a few small stores like a general market, post office and barbershop. There weren't any big supermarkets or shopping malls like we have today. My grandpa says people used to just go to the local shops to get basic food and supplies. Nobody really traveled far from Oakville to get things.
Speaking of traveling, there were hardly any cars on the roads in those days! Most families didn't own a vehicle. My grandparents walked everywhere they needed to go, or took the bus or train for longer trips. Can you imagine having to walk
miles just to get groceries or go to school? No wonder everyone was so skinny back then!
School itself was really different too. All the classroom supplies were very basic - just chalkboards, books, pencils and paper. No iPads, computers or smart boards. And the schools back then were small old buildings, not the big fancy ones we have now. My grandma says she had 35 kids in her class! That's huge compared to the 20 kids per class we have today. Another big difference in the old days was there wasn't much for entertainment or activities. No YouTube, Netflix, video games or electronics at all! My grandparents had to make their own fun. They would play pickup sports games in the fields, go fishing, have picnics, or just use their imagination. One of their favorite things was going to the small theater downtown to watch a move and get a milkshake after.
While the city has changed a ton over the decades, some things have stayed the same. For example, everyone still loves the beach and waterfront area for walking, biking or having cookouts. And the local parks have been around forever for recreation. People have always enjoyed getting outside in nature.
I feel really lucky to live in Oakville today with all our modern conveniences, technology, and activities. Life is so much easier than how it used to be! We have grocery stores, restaurants, entertainment and amenities just down the street. My
grandparents definitely had it harder when they were kids here. At the same time, there are some ways that life was maybe better back in their day. It was a quieter, simpler time without all the busyness we have now. Families spent more quality time together instead of being distracted by screens and devices all the time. And you couldn't beat the classic outdoor fun of making your own games and adventures!
Whether in the past or present, I'm just happy to call Oakville my home. This cozy little city will always be special to me. While I'm excited to one day visit other places, there's no place I'd rather grow up than right here. Thanks for letting me tell you all about my awesome hometown!
