As the result of birth control and improvement of medical care， supporting the old has become an issue of China today.

Because of the different culture and traditio， supporting the old is different from country to country. For instance， British is a developed country and the problem of supporting the old is solved very well these years. The government takes a series of measures to solve the problem and also pays a lot of money for the old every year in order to make them live better.

In China， because of its tradition， the old people are mostly supported by their children. But our government and our society are taking measures to support the old.

As the development of economy and society is so rapid that we believe the system of our country to support the old would be perfect one day.

One of the most challenging problems of today’s society is the question who should be responsible for our old people. It’s not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want our society to have. In my essay I would like to discuss four different models, namely , the company, the government, the individual and the big family.

Firstly, the company can be responsible for their retired employees .For this reason a special fund could be established .The advantage of this model is, if you belief in the capitalist system that

it should be the cheapest solution. A possible problem is that the companies might have competition disadvantage due to higher staff costs.

A second solution is that the government has to have the responsibility for the old people’s care. It can finance this with its tax incomes. Actually, this is the most democratic model since everybody gets as much money as he or she needs. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this solution seems not to work very well. The government can no longer afford supporting all the old people.

Another way of solving this problem is to give back the responsibility to the individual. It means that everybody has to save money during their working life for the life after their retirement .This seems to be not a very fair model because their will certainly exist people who can’t afford to save part of their salary. In this case the government would have to care for them.

A last solution is to go back to the old model of the big family who cares for all their members. I don’t think this is possible in our days society because the family structures have so much changed.

To sum up I have to admit that I can’t find a really good solution for this problem. All models have advantages and disadvantages .Certainly we have to think about this topic much more in the future.

There have been several issues that are debatable on who should provide care for our elderly people. Some people may argue that thegovernment sector should be responsible to facilitate in providing optimum care to our older people. Generally speaking, the responsibility should be in a holistic approach meaning as a whole there must be an active participation of the different organization or sectors. For instance, (the)government should allocate more budgets in giving better medical services and other amenities needed by our senior citizen. Providing health care benefits such free hospitalization, free or cheap medication with quality and effective drug is a great help for them. Also, the government should also implement other needs (?)by our old folks and these are the basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter in order to sustain life.

Moreover, the community organization takes an important role and has deep responsibility in providing care for our older adult(s). They help elderly people to maintain their sense of integrity and not to experience despair. This is quite common for an older adult they feel that they are neglected and don’t have enough reason to live in. (hic, so complicated. I think you just say it is quite common when older adults feel that....)The organization helps them to be active again by giving them certain task this can be seen in any workshop wherein its main goal is to established self- actualization.

Lastly, the family has a big responsibility in taking care our elderly. I come from a native country which is 85 percent predominantly belongs to a roman catholic religion. The close family ties are so strong sending our older adult in a nursing home or any institution is taboo. Providing tender loving care to our elders especially our parents is a sign of respect and gratitude.

To sum up, let me reiterate that government, community organization and family are the one who is responsible to our older people. It’s a matter of proper channel and delegation in order to facilitate the needs of our senior citizen. The approach should be holistic in providing physical, emotional and financial needs in order to have a better life. The government sector, local organization and family should cooperate to work as team. In this way we can give them a meaning life as a pay back for their service when they are still active in their early years.
